The site is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, which has organized multi-year cleaning projects to restore discolored areas on the Taj Mahal’s facade caused by air pollution and also excretions from insects coming from the adjacent Yamuna River.
Architecture: The most recognizable feature of the Taj Mahal is the large, white, domed mausoleum, which is surrounded by four tall minarets on each corner. The exterior is made of white marble.
October 2017 –The Taj Mahal is one of a number of sites excluded from a brochure issued by Uttar Pradesh’s tourism department. Referencing Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh’s explanation that the monument is not “reflective of Indian culture,” Swapan Dasgupta, a BJP member of the upper house of the Indian Parliament, tells CNN that any controversy has been blown out of proportion.
May 9, 2018 – India’s Supreme Court orders the Archaeological Survey of India to do a better job with its restoration plan, as discoloration and stains on the Taj Mahal’s exterior have not been resolved as promised.
